Petrified National Forest National Park

Preconceived thoughts realized and shot down…Tom and I believed that Arizona was pretty much a big sand pit with cacti scattered around with a focus on desolation. For the past few weeks, these preconceptions have been thoroughly shot down. That being said, we headed out of Camp Verde and over the central mountains north of Phoenix to drop down to I-40 and Winslow, AZ on our way to the Petrified National Forest. Wow–what a desolate sand pit area with the requisite cactus! But the beauty continues to abound with the geology telling the story of 200 million years of activity. OK, I have to admit that I was surprised there wasn’t a “forest” to be seen with a hundred miles at the Petrified Forest NP, but millions of years of geological activity took the forest and turned it into these amazing colorful crystalized rock logs.
