Las Vegas Area (Jody, Valley of Fire, Lake Mead & Hoover Dam)

Visit with Jody Myers in Boulder City, NV & the Funky Town of Nelson (March 25): Jody and I were roommates when we worked for Lockheed in Sunnyvale, CA in 1985 and she and Tom were great friends. So Tom and I became friends by osmosis–because that’s how you become friends with friends of friends! We took a wander around the funky “ghost” town of Nelson for some Sunday afternoon entertainment.

Valley of the Fire State Park, North of Lake Mead, Nevada (March 24):

Took Liv on her own sight seeing adventure as we were in transit from Zion NP area to Las Vegas area–she did quite well on the scenic drive through the park and found the requisite 3 end-to-end parking spaces to wait for us as we hiked the White Domes area.

Lake Mead Area

  • Railroad Tunnel Trail & Lake Mead (March 25): The original train track bed from the Lake Mead Visitors Center to Hoover Dam was refurbished to a walking/biking trail that takes you through 5 tunnels and provides amazing views of Lake Mead bone yard” for the dam and the electrical power plant area ending at a view of the dam. The photos here are NOT from that view point as it wasn’t as great as our DIY walking tour that we took a few days later, but it did provide almost 8 miles round trip of fascinating scenery and history of the area.
  • Hoover Dam DIY Tour (March 27): We ditched the tour after we found that we couldn’t pay $10 to park in the new fancy underground parking garage since we had a gas tank (for the generator) in the back of the pick up. But free parking awaited us AFTER getting to drive across the dam. So we did our own walking tour of the dam and bridge overlooking the dam.
  • Lake Mead Parkway Trail (March 28): We finally were able to get the bikes out for a challenging ride on part of the Lake Mead Parkway Trail.
