Joshua Tree National Park & Boondocking, Visit to Gladys Kempe & Orange County

Joshua Tree National Park (April 2):

Boondocking at its best (April 1 – 4): We finally boondocked for the first time, meaning we camped with no hookups to electric, water or sewer  (well, official definition of boondocking includes NOT paying for where you are staying, which we did pay for Joshua Tree Black Rock Campground). It felt like we were really camping opposed to staying in a resort. We even had our first fire and smores! While we did fine with the limitations on the hook ups, we found that we have a leak in our fresh water tank, which will require a visit to a dealer when we are in Morgan Hill starting next week. Tom is tempted to pull off the undercarriage to take a look, but we are under warranty and will try that first. We won’t be able to do all the camping we currently have planned in Canada unless we get the fresh water tank fixed.

Orange County (April 2-3): We took an impromptu trip to Tustin, CA in Orange County LA to visit my mom’s cousin Gladys Kempe, which included a trip over to Balboa Island on a ferry that held 3 cars and cost us $4 to cross. Gladys took us in search for whales on Dana Point–no luck on whales, but lovely scenery despite the heavy marine layer of fog hovering over the coast.
