May 25 – 28: Memorial Day Weekend spent near the town of Montesano, WA with a prime camping spot on Lake Quigg. We ventured north to Quinault Lake for a nice hike and drive on Saturday. Then we entertained Tom’s dad’s wife, Jo Peters and her daughter, Janice Thomas on Sunday, May 27th. We hit the road and headed north around the Olympic National Forest with peeks at the Pacific Ocean as we headed to our RV park on Crescent Bay just west of Port Angeles on Memorial Day, Tom’s birthday.
May 29: Hurricane Ridge and hike on Hurricane Hill with views of the Olympic Mountains. We even saw a local marmot scurrying around!
May 30th: Cape Flattery–the most NW point of the Lower 48…I think we could see Russia! We definitely could see Canada and Vancouver Island…it was just across the bay! We will be there at the end of August looking back to where we were in May! We stopped in Neah Bay for lunch and viewed the Makah Cultural & Research Center.
May 31: Sol Duc Waterfalls and Hot Springs in the morning and then a tour of Port Angeles in the afternoon. Port Angeles has a very interesting history in that they had to raise the first two streets closest to the bay when they wanted to add plumbing to their businesses in 1914 AND Tom’s great grandparents lived in the area for about 3 years in the mid 1920’s and Tom’s grandfather most likely got his shoes from Red Goose Shoes that is still open from that time period.
