OK, I know I’ve whined a bit about the smoke for a good part of our trip, but overall, traveling through the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia prove to be an amazing experience! Here are a few things we’ve learned in and about Canada:
- We are literate in a new language–metric! Tom was delighted as we crossed the boarder at the end of July and he saw “80” and the speed limit. As his foot hit the gas pedal, I said, “I believe that is metric”. So what is 80 kph? Just under 50 mph. Sigh… He did find a feature on our truck that converted all of our instruments to metric, including the temp to Celsius and that is what we have used for the past month. Celsius has been the biggest challenge, but here is my cheat sheet (Yes, we’ve have temps below 10C. We’ve seen this whole range.)
- 10C = 50F
- 20C = 68F
- 30C = 86F
- 40C = 104F
- Don’t make jokes at the border crossing, even if your border dude asks you if you have any stow-aways!
- Where did this random few inches of snow come from at the end of July?
- Elk have their own rules for crossing the roads, even if the government has provided lovely wildlife crossing bridges for them.
- Bears usually just wander the sides of the road.
Food is always a focus on our trips.
