We spent 5 nights at Medina Lake touring the San Antonio area for wine tasting in the Fredricksburg area, wandering and hiking further west in search of the Lost Maples and of course, San Antonio for the River Walk, the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. We met up with my cousin Kyrstinn and her husband Matt for the McNay Museum, lunch and lots of great ideas of what else to see.
Texas seems to have a rich history in churches from the past–the missions from the Spanish missionaries built in the late 1500’s and then the Czechoslovakian and other German churches from the late 1800’s with their incredible detail and painted ceilings as they had done in Europe.
March 13 (Wednesday) : San Antonio
Missions of San Antonio: We started off with visiting the Vistor’s Center at Mission San Jose and then drove up to Mission Conception and rode our bikes down to the furtherst southern mission, Mission Espada and then back up to Mission Conception. The Alamo Mission in downtown San Antonio and the 4 subsequent missions following the San Antonio River about 2.5 – 3 miles apart. Nice 14 – 15 mile for the first time out on the bikes this year!
March 14 – 17:
- Meeting up with Kyrstinn and Matt Carlsburg at the McNay Art Museum,
- Lost Maples State Park
- Bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brush and Czechoslovakian Painted Church in Praha, TX
Love San Antonio, it has such a culture all its own. The Alamo is a shadow of its original self, I’m thrilled that you got around to the other missions to experience the feel of Texas history. You couldn’t have picked a better time for bluebonnets. My dad’s German heritage made him take us often to the Hill Country with its distinctive charms. My own history is embedded with those stories.
