Lake Superior, Light Houses, National Parks and Friends – Part 1: Minnesota

As we prepare to head south tomorrow away from the northern border of the US, I had a realization today (August 3, 2019) that the past 2 weeks have taken us around the US part of Lake Superior (big deal around here to go around Lake Superior–you can get stamps for Lake Superior stops AND lighthouse stops!) So my next few blog posts will be based off this adventure.

Lake Superior

Friday, July 20: We entered Minnesota last night and Tom got his 50th USA state at that time! Woo hoo for Tom! I am just missing Iowa, which we hope to hit this fall. We camped for 2 nights just south of Duluth and the North Shore of Lake Superior up to Beaver Bay.

Tom’s brother Alan Lounsbury, their cousin, Scott Ferris and Scott’s friend, Ed Holm actually rode their motorcycles on most of the Superior Lake Circle (I doubt they got stamps for going through various locations) and met up with us in our campground near Duluth.

Saturday, July 21: The next day we took off up the North Shore — the Minnesota part of Lake Superior to take in two light houses, Two Harbors Lighthouse and Split Rock Light House.

Sunday, July 22: We finished up our Duluth visit with breakfast with my cousin Carmen Rasmussen who recently moved to that area.

July 21 – 24: OK, Voyagers National Park is NOT on Lake Superior, but it is right up there on the northern border of the US. I didn’t know what a Voyageur was until we visitied the park…French Canadian dudes from the 1820s who basically canoed up to Winnipeg from Montreal to get furs and bring them back to sell to the Europeans.

We camped on Kabetogma Lake, which proved interesting in watching loons. I watched the babies for about 15 minutes and then the parents fishing together for about a half hour. I love loons!
