Aug 22 – 26: We came across the a cause way, the only means of travel to the Nova Scotia island of Cape Breton, which seems to be about a 1/3 of the Providence and camped for 4 nights in Baddeck on the Cabot Trail. Every 4 or 5 days we change up experiences and this was no different. We enjoyed a traditional Lobster Dinner (seafood chowder, mussels, lobster AND dessert) in Baddeck and swore we couldn’t do that again as it was A LOT of food…oh did I mention homemade rolls? As with everywhere we’ve been in the Maritimes, there is a significant Acadian presence with the Acadian flag flying. Interesting as we learned about the Acadians when we were in Louisiana this past spring. Our travels constantly build on each other.
Friday, Aug 23: We had to take the truck over to Sydney on Cape Breton Island for an oil change and were able to take in the historical recreated town of Louisbourg, originating from 1744. Interestingly enough, it is cheaper for us to get diesel oil changes in Vigo, our 3/4 ton Chevy diesel in Canada than it is in the US. Also diesel is often cheaper than gas, and works about to be about the same price as what we pay in the States with the Candaian/US exchange rate.
Aug 24 – 26: We enjoyed putzing around the area of Baddeck, visited the Alexander Grahm Bell National Park site, detailing much of his achievements both before inventing the telephone and after, attended a Ceilidh in the local town hall one night, drove the Cabot Trail and hiked to White Point and hiked to Uisge Ban Falls in the local Provincial Park.
