Puget Sound Area (Aug 23 – 30)

We spent a week at the Thousand Trails Campground of La Conner RV & Camping Resort near the bridge to Anacortes, WA on the Puget Sound. Thousand Trails is a membership that we are members of for the past two years that allows you to stay for “free” once you have paid their membership. On this trip, we attempted to make up for the fact we hadn’t been able to use the membership for most of the year. Thankfully, the La Conner location did not disappoint with great sunset views over Similk Bay, easy access to Whidbey Island and the ferry from Anacortes to San Juan Island.

We loved the small town of La Conner, ate lunch outside on the waterfront at least 3 times at the La Conner Seafood and Prime Rib House, rode our bikes on the Snohomish Centential Bike Trail near the Skagit Valley (we need to come back during tulip season), had two visitors from Seattle, Tom’s sister Cynthia and our daughter, Grace and had amazingly clear weather to see Mt. Baker and Mt. Adams in the distance from Whidbey Island.

Saturday, Aug 29: Our trip to San Juan Island was a mixed bag. I was hoping to have a seriously amazing experience such that I could convince Tom to come back at a later date and volunteer for either a position at the American Camp San Juan National Historical Site or Lime Kiln State Park, but the dependency on the ferry system pretty much blew that idea out of the water. Oh, and Tom would NEVER dress up in historical garb for the San Juan National Historical Site, which I thought would be fun! It was a beautiful day, but we didn’t see any whales. It seems like the whale watching from that area has been down significantly in numbers over the past few years.
