August 4 – 9, 2024: We spent 5 days in Homer with plans to see both Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Park. A strong wind pattern over the mountains that you fly over to get to Katmai NP pushed our trip out 2 days, and we were able to make the 1.5 hour flight and 5 hours stop-over at Brooks Falls to see the Coastal Brown Bears (Grizzly Bears in the lower 48). See AlCan — Part 9: Katmai National Park for the bears.
Fog completely obliterated our trip to Lake Clark NP, which we may try to return to at the end of our trip. Meanwhile, we had a great time putzing around the Kenai Pennisula and Homer area with a wander through Beluga Slough and the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, a visit to a few art galleries, wine tasting in Alaska and a wander back up the coast to the little former Russian settlement of Ninilchik.

Drive down to Homer. That is the Homer Spit in the middle of the bay. We camped at the very end of that spit!
