Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ

October 11: We spent the day dodging rain and mud as we visited Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ. We took the South Rim Drive  in the morning to see the canyon and view points from above and then took the Navajo lead jeep tour down in the valley that afternoon. We were very thankful for our Navajo jeep driver and tour guide as we basically forged our way up a very muddy wash to see many of the original Native American dwellings and petroglyphs, geological sites and current Native American farms through out the Canyon de Chelly Valley. Canyon de Chelly has had people living in its surrounding area for over 5000 years.

Canyon de Chelly Valley Floor: All access to this area is via jeep tours provided by the local Navajo Nation. We learned much about history, but more interesting was that we learned about the current Navajo customs and life style. One of the advantages of all the rain is that we got to see waterfalls everywhere!
